Madrid, 20 September 2019. PONS IP, a global firm specializing in comprehensive advice on intellectual property and new technologies in Spain, Europe and Latin America, and its technology partner Smart Protection, a company specializing in online asset protection, have presented the technological platform ‘Smart Brand Protection’ at Fundación PONS. This technological platform, aimed at online companies and developed through machine learning and big data, identifies potential infringements and unauthorized uses of trademarks, as well as the commercialization of counterfeits on the net, achieving an efficiency over 95% online for any business industry.

The scope of protection of Smart Brand Protection covers the main open sources on the Internet, including from major search engines, social networks, P2P, Torrent, Apps, marketplaces, downloading websites or spoof websites. Once activated, Smart Brand Protection automatically performs – 365 days a year, 24 hours a day – web searches aimed at detecting possible infringements of intellectual property at a global level. According to data from the International Trademark Association (INTA), the volume of global counterfeiting and piracy is expected to reach $991 billion by 2022

The service has several levels of protection, prior trademark portfolio audit and parameterization by PONS IP:

  • Self Protection – After parameterization, the user performs the assessment of detected infringements and their subsequent reporting in the platform.
  • Shared Protection – PONS IP, after parameterization with the user, it validates directly the possible trademark infringements, and sends them to the user for analysis and eventual deletion.
  • Premium Protection – PONS IP, after parameterization with the user, it validates the trademark infringements and acts against those improper uses, agreed with the client, sending requirement and/or presenting objection.

During the presentation, Nuria Marcos, PONS IP General Manager, acknowledged the importance of complementarity between the legal firm and a technology company in this collaboration agreement, since ‘our specialization in intellectual property, combined with the use of machine learning technology and Big Data, allows us to detect, analyze and eliminate counterfeits, infringements and improper use of trademarks. Thanks to the collaboration with our partner Smart Protection and the tool’s development, we will be able to provide a better service, optimizing operational costs and reaction times to help our clients defend their trademarks’. Javier Perea, Smart Protection’s CEO and co-founder commented: ‘This partnership adds technological value to PONS IP, providing comprehensive protection for its customers’ trademarks’.
