PONS IP, coordinator of Fundación Cotec’s new working group on Technological Sovereignty and Industrial and Intellectual Property
PONS IP, coordinator of Fundación Cotec’s new working group on Technological Sovereignty and Industrial and Intellectual Property

Fundación Cotec para la Innovación has created a new Working Group, coordinated by PONS IP, with a dual purpose: to identify actions to promote technological sovereignty in Spain and to foster the generation of technology protected by industrial and intellectual property rights.

This group, comprised of 25 Cotec Members, held its first meeting today. Coordinated by PONS IP, it will be represented by its Managing Director, Nuria Marcos; the Director of Marketing, People and Corporate Culture, Ana López de Castro; the entity’s Strategic Advisor, Luis Ignacio Vicente; and the Director of Fundación PONS, María Jesús Magro.

The concept of technological sovereignty that will be the starting point for the group’s work is “the ability of a state to provide the technologies it deems critical for welfare, competitiveness, and its ability to act, and to be able to develop these technologies or source them from other areas without one-sided dependencies”. Fraunhofer Institute established this definition two years ago, coinciding with the start of the pandemic and given the problems arising in supply chains.

The group will use studies and regulations on the subject as a reference and develop recommendations that help to promote the development of its own technology in Spain, emphasising the importance of creating and managing industrial and intellectual property rights, among other matters.

The Cotec Members that comprise this working group include: ADIF, the City Council of Madrid, the City Council of Málaga, CaixaBank, the Council of Science, Universities and spokespersons for the Community of Madrid, the Málaga Provincial Council, Exxita Be Circular, FI Group, Fundación Atlético de Madrid, Fundación Deloitte, Fundación Iberdrola, Fundación Tecnalia Research & Innovation, the Council of Science, University and Knowledge Society of the Government of Aragon, Grupo Antolín Irausa, Institute for Business Competitiveness of Castile and León (ICE), Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE), the Government of Extremadura, Patentes Talgo, Repsol, TEDAE, Telefónica, TK Elevator Innovation Center, TMC Employeneurs, and the University of Granada.

Fundación Cotec is a private non-profit organisation whose mission is to promote innovation as a driving force of economic and social development in Spain. It has nearly 100 members, including private companies and regional and local administrations. His Majesty King Felipe IV is the Honorary Chairman. Moreover, Cotec Italy has existed since 2001 and Cotec Portugal since 2003. Since its creation in 1990, Cotec is known for its intense efforts to support technological innovation among Spanish companies. In fulfilling this mission, Cotec mainly excels in two activities: acting as an observatory for R&D&I, and providing analyses and advice on innovation, technology and the economy. In 2015, Cotec decided to take on new challenges to become a true agent of change and bring about structural and systemic transformations through innovation.
